News from the Winery: the pruning process

With the start of 2014 there has been some important work going head in the Follador Prosecco Vineyards.

It is the time of the year for the pruning process to start. This is an extremely important and essential part of the grape development and must be undertaken before the vines start to bud in March. Pruning prevents the vine from growing too much foliage, which can hinder the growth and development of the grapes. A well-pruned vine increases the productivity and quality of the crop as it ensures maximum exposure to sunlight and proper air circulation. These factors mean there is less likelihood of disease or pest infestation.

There are several different ways of training the vines to grow to assist with canopy management. The type of vine training system takes into consideration the positions and affecting climate conditions of the vineyard, including sunlight, humidity and wind.Follador Prosecco prune their vines according to a training system called ‘Double Overturned’ Training. This is a mixture of both cane and spur pruning and the canes are trained in opposite directions along wires. It is the most common and widely used technique in the Conegliano – Valdobbiadene region as it the most productive for Prosecco production.
